A 63-0 rout has cost an Oregon high school football coach his job, the New York Times reports. Marist Catholic High in Eugene dismissed head coach Zach Loboy after his team pounded short-handed Cottage Grove High—which was down to just 16 players—in a game that was ultimately stopped at halftime, USA Today reports. Marist not only piled on points but tried two onside kicks, including one with the score already 56-0 and less than two minutes left in the half.
Marist's principal told parents the firing was needed to align with the school's "mission and values," per KVAL. The athletic director called Loboy's approach unrepresentative of how the school wants to treat opponents. The decision to end the game early was made jointly by both schools' athletic directors and the officials' commissioner. Loboy had led Marist to an undefeated state title last season.
