Tyler Ulrich, a football player for Southern Nazarene University, has died after receiving a traumatic brain injury during a game. The 21-year-old safety had been hurt last Saturday during Southern Nazarene University's game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas, ABC News reports. He died Thursday after five days in a hospital. "This loss is deeply felt across our campus," the university, a private Christian school in Bethany, Oklahoma, posted on Facebook. Southern Nazarene did not provide a cause of death or details about Ulrich's injury, per ESPN.
The game was delayed for nearly an hour Saturday after Ulrich was hurt. He was in his third season at Southern Nazarene and had 16 starts in 20 games, ranking third on the team with 36 tackles. Southern Nazarene's game scheduled for Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma State University has been canceled. One of Ulrich's high school coaches, Jason Vines, at Azle High School in Azle, Texas, told ABC that Ulrich was an "unbelievable young man."
