A college football pregame tribute in San Antonio turned tragic Saturday when a service member fell while rappelling from the Alamodome rafters during an aerial demonstration and later died, military officials said. Video from the stands shows the service member descending on a rope before dropping to the turf at midfield, where personnel rushed in and he was taken off the field on a golf cart, NBC News reports. Per ESPN, the service member "appeared to lose control while descending, sliding down the line and crashing to the turf."
The unnamed service member, assigned to the Air Force's 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead, according to Nellis Air Force Base. The fall delayed kickoff of the University of Texas at San Antonio's game against the Naval Academy, which annually includes a Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans, the AP reports. UT-San Antonio said it was "deeply saddened" and that its "heartfelt thoughts and prayers" are with the service member's family and colleagues. An investigation is underway.
