The stump speech stopped short in North Platte, Nebraska, on Thursday, when Vice President JD Vance broke from his remarks to tend to a woman in apparent medical distress behind him, USA Today reports. Video shows supporters on risers signaling for help; Vance halted his speech, turned toward the commotion, and moved into the crowd as law enforcement and medical personnel responded.
"Looks like we got a medical issue," he told attendees, asking for a campaign doctor and urging people to stay calm. He then led those "of praying type" in the Lord's Prayer while officers assisted the woman and others tried to fan the air around her with campaign signs. USA Today notes that medical incidents at crowded, standing-room rallies are not unusual. KHGI reports the woman fainted, and that after she returned to consciousness, Vance told the crowd, "Praise be to God. She's doing fine." Also at the rally, Vance promised cheaper fertilizer for American farmers thanks to a $1.3 billion investment in domestic fertilizer manufacturing in the state, KNOP reports.
