Defend title with 2-0 defeat of Brazil

Germany took down Brazil 2-0 today, to win its second straight women’s World Cup. The game’s pivotal moment came in the second half, when Brazilian star Marta had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick, but was blocked by goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. “After the penalty save, I felt it was meant to be," said Germany coach Silvia Neid.

Germany didn’t allow a goal in six tournament games, outscoring opponents 21-0. No team has ever had a clean sheet for a major tournament before. In the finals, the Brazilian attack, which dismantled the US 4-0, dominated the midfield but could not get past the German defense. Eventually, second-half goals from Birgit Prinze and Simone Laudehr sealed the win.
