The Texas 15-year-old who shot a teacher, then killed himself, at his high school was facing academic struggles at the time, NBC News reports. The Comal County Sheriff's Office says the teen brought a .357 revolver from home to Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde on Monday. He shot the teacher, then turned the gun on himself. The student died at the scene; the teacher, whose name has not been released, remained hospitalized Tuesday, but is conscious, KSAT reports. No other injuries were reported. No school resource officer was on the campus at the time, WOAI reports.

Authorities say the teenager had been failing several classes and "experiencing academic challenges," but they have not identified a clear motive. Detectives seized multiple electronic devices from the student's home, which are now undergoing forensic review "in an effort to learn more about the student's actions and possible motive," the sheriff's office said. Sheriff Mark Reynolds added that investigators are checking whether the teacher was currently instructing the student.

Hill Country College Prep, about 27 miles north of San Antonio, was closed Tuesday, and the Comal Independent School District is offering extra counseling services. In a video message, Superintendent John E. Chapman III called Monday one of the district's toughest days and urged residents to support the teacher and her family, asking community members to wear blue in solidarity. The sheriff's office says the investigation remains active as officials work to piece together what led up to the shooting.
