Passengers on a Delta flight from Southern California to Seattle ended up in the Bay Area instead after an unexplained smell in the cabin prompted an emergency diversion. Delta Flight 1430, an Airbus A220-100 that left John Wayne Airport in Orange County around 7:30pm Tuesday, turned west about 50 minutes into the trip while flying over Yosemite and headed for Oakland International Airport, People reports. A Delta spokesperson said the move was made "out of an abundance of caution" after crew members reported an odor.

The FAA described the issue as "fumes in the cabin" and said the plane landed safely in Oakland around 8:50pm, with passengers deplaning normally. The runway was briefly checked and then reopened, according to an airport representative. The jet has been pulled from service for inspection. The FAA plans to investigate. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that some passengers who had expected a three-hour flight didn't arrive in Seattle until the next day. Delta said passengers were provided with "a combination of hotels, meals and alternate ground transportation/rebooking via other flights."
