House Democrats now want first lady Melania Trump placed under oath in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The Hill reports several members of the House Oversight Committee are urging the step after she publicly denounced Epstein this week as "disgraceful," rejected any connection to him or Ghislaine Maxwell, and dismissed a resurfaced email Trump sent to Maxwell as "casual correspondence." That 2002 note, released in newly public Epstein files, praised a photo of Maxwell in a New York Magazine story about Epstein and was signed, "Love, Melania." Rep. Suhas Subramanyam said on X that if Trump wants to clear her name, as she said, she should appear before the committee, not just promote her book.
Rep. Ro Khanna says he endorses calling her as a witness, arguing she "has relevant information" if she believes Epstein "was not alone" in his crimes, as she said Thursday. Trump called for a public hearing focused on survivors—an idea welcomed by Rep. Robert Garcia, top committee Democrat. Survivors themselves called such a hearing "a deflection of responsibility" and pressed the government to fully release Epstein-related files, saying failures to do so "continue to put lives at risk while shielding enablers." Rep. James Comer told Fox News on Friday that he would back Trump's suggestion to bring Epstein's victims into a hearing, per USA Today. But a spokesperson for the panel's Republican chairman would not say whether he supports deposing her.
