The arrest of a man in a 1990 cold-case murder has drawn new attention to the 2012 disappearance of his wife. Authorities have charged 54-year-old Robert William McCaffrey Jr. in the New Jersey killing of 27-year-old Lisa Marie McBride, who vanished after a night out in New York City on June 23, 1990, per People. Neighbors last saw her enter her home in Vernon Township, NJ, around 2am. Police found a cut phone line and slashed window screen before her body was discovered four months later in a recreation area in Sandyston. Though the case grew cold, McBride's body was exhumed in 2022 in the hope of gaining closure.

A decade before that development in March 2012, McCaffrey reported that his wife, 36-year-old Marjorie "Gayle" McCaffrey, had vanished from South Carolina after the pair had an argument. Police determined he lied about a supposed farewell letter Gayle left behind, which turned out to "have been fabricated," according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. He was convicted of obstructing justice but a grand jury declined to indict him for murder in 2018, per WCBD. Authorities continue to investigate both cases, asking anyone with information to reach out. Meanwhile, McCaffrey is being held in Dare County, North Carolina, pending extradition to New Jersey. He's charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree burglary in the McBride case.
