Trump Illustrates Tips Policy With Delivery

Fast food delivered a political point at the White House on Monday. A DoorDash driver bringing a McDonald's order to the Oval Office walked away with a $100 tip from President Trump after he used the made-for-camera moment to spotlight his push to exempt tips from federal income tax. "The no tax on tips is something special," Trump said, per the New York Post, as he handed the cash to Sharon Simmons on the West Wing colonnade, just before Tax Day. "The reason for this is the fact that I heard you picked up an extra $11,000 … because the tax bill was so big, the refund was the biggest you've ever had," a White House video shows Trump telling her, per the Hill.

Simmons, wearing a "DoorDash Grandma" T-shirt and identified by the company as an Arkansas native and grandmother of 10, told Trump the bags contained "your favorites." The White House didn't detail the order. The event promoted his "One Big Beautiful Bill," which excludes up to $25,000 in tipped income from taxation for workers earning under $150,000 a year, while still collecting payroll taxes and adding a temporary tax break on overtime pay in 2025. Trump changed topics, asking Simmons if she thinks men should play in women's sports. "I really don't have an opinion on that," she answered. "No, no, I'm here about no tax on tips." At the end, Trump invited Simmons into the Oval Office.
