A principal's status as hero among students was confirmed Friday, less than two weeks after he tackled a school shooter and was shot in the process. In an emotional moment, students at Oklahoma's Pauls Valley High voted principal Kirk Moore their prom king, erupting in cheers as he walked into the celebration and received his crown to the tune of Nickleback's "Hero," the Guardian reports. Moore reacted quickly when a former student entered the school on April 7 with two semi-automatic handguns, ordered people to the floor, and tried to fire at students before his weapon malfunctioned. Surveillance video captured Moore, who was shot in the leg, charging the suspect and, with help from another staff member, disarming him.
The police chief said Moore "saved kids' lives." At prom, he was crowned as Nickleback sang, "And they say that a hero can save us / I'm not going to stand here and wait." Moore, grinning from ear to ear, received high-fives from students who jumped up and down and applauded enthusiastically. "The kids went nuts. It was crazy," DJ Burk Ozbirn told WHAS, adding Moore, himself, was "ecstatic." "The school needed that after what happened," Ozbirn said. In an earlier statement, Moore said his response drew on training shared by "so many educators around the country," adding that he was thankful for the "outpouring of love and support" since the attack.
