It was indeed a heart attack that killed 57-year-old Melrose Place alum Patrick Muldoon, reports People. The actor and producer's death certificate lists myocardial infarction as the cause of death, with pulmonary embolism and hereditary coagulopathy as underlying causes. The latter is a condition in which the body has a problem forming blood clots.

Patrick Muldoon, a familiar face to soap fans and sci-fi buffs alike, died Sunday at 57 after a sudden heart attack, reports Deadline. The actor and producer was best known for originating the role of Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives in the early 1990s, later returning to the NBC soap in 2011-12. He also memorably played scheming ad exec Richard Hart on Melrose Place and appeared in a string of TV movies throughout the late '90s and 2000s, notes People.

A former USC football player, the native of San Pedro, Calif., broke into acting with small roles on Who's the Boss? and Saved by the Bell before landing one of his most recognizable film parts as Zander Barcalow in 1997's Starship Troopers. Muldoon was also active behind the camera, serving as executive producer in films including The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Arkansas, Marlowe, and The Card Counter. His latest acting project, crime thriller Dirty Hands, is due out later this year, and he was attached to Kockroach, a film with Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton currently filming. Friends remembered him as "endlessly generous" and "full of life." He is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart, his parents, sister Shana and brother-in-law Ahmet Zappa, and their children.
