Jake Reiner says the day his parents died didn't just take their lives—it wiped out the future he imagined with them, per TMZ. In a candid Substack essay simply titled "Mom and Dad: The center of my life," Reiner writes that losing Rob and Michele Singer Reiner still feels like a "living nightmare," and that "nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time." "I was robbed of so many things that day," he says, listing milestones his parents will miss: his wedding, future grandchildren, and the career he's still trying to build among them. Rob and Michelle Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles-area home on Dec. 14, a case that rattled Hollywood and led to murder charges against their other son, Nick.
Jake touches only briefly on the legal case, saying it's even harder to process with his brother "at the center of it," and he adds that some details will remain private. Instead, he focuses on memories: his mother as the family's planner and driving force, his father as his hero and Dodgers-watching partner who encouraged him to pursue acting. "They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them," Jake writes. "They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world." Jake notes he speaks only for himself—his sister, Romy, will share her story "in her own way and in her time"—and closes with a request for "love and compassion" as the family grieves. More here. (This writer says she feels for Jake and Romy, as she herself has a brother with schizophrenia, like Nick.)
