President Trump argues that Saturday's shooting at the White House correspondents' dinner demonstrates why it's necessary to build a White House ballroom. He has at least one Democratic senator in agreement. In a social media post, Sen. John Fetterman urged his fellow Democrats to ditch their "Trump Derangement Syndrome" and get behind the controversial project, reports the Hill. "That venue wasn't built to accommodate an event with the line of succession for the U.S. government," wrote Fetterman, referring to the Washington Hilton. "After witnessing last night, drop the TDS and build the White House ballroom for events exactly like these."

Fetterman linked to an article by Joe DePaolo of Mediaite headlined, "I Was Inside the Washington Hilton Tonight. The Security was Downright Awful." The suspected shooter also wrote about how easy it was for him to check into a room at the hotel and get easy proximity to the dinner venue, though he was subdued before entering. Democratic strategist Jon Cooper had a quick rebuttal to Fetterman, pointing out that the annual correspondents' dinner is not sponsored by the White House. "Nobody is forcing the VP and other Cabinet members to attend this fancy black tie event."

The ballroom project, meanwhile, is currently tied up in litigation with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which says the 90,000-square-foot addition would damage the White House's historic character. After the weekend attack, the Justice Department called the preservation group's lawsuit "frivolous" and pressed it to back off.
