A terrifying scene unfolded Monday afternoon in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a man armed with an assault-style rifle walked down the middle of a busy roadway, firing at passersby. At least 50 to 60 rounds were discharged along Memorial Drive, more than a dozen vehicles were hit, and two men in separate cars suffered life-threatening injuries, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said later Monday, per CBS News. She said a state trooper and a Marine veteran with a license to carry fired on the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Tyler Brown of Boston, and struck him multiple times, ending the incident within "minutes."

Brown, who has prior convictions for violent offenses and once faced charges for allegedly trying to kill a Boston police officer, is hospitalized in intensive care and facing counts including armed assault with intent to murder, per the New York Times. Police say there is no apparent connection between Brown and his targets. Hundreds of witnesses are expected to be interviewed; some have described running for their lives as bullets were fired around them. A USPS truck's windshield was pierced by a bullet that landed inches from the driver's headrest. The trooper's cruiser was also hit. Investigators are asking anyone with video to come forward.
