Before Monday's fatal shooting at a mosque in San Diego, police received a worried phone call from the mother of a 17-year-old boy, reports the San Diego Tribune. She told them he might be suicidal and had driven off in her car with three of her guns, along with an 18-year-old friend, and both were clad in camouflage, per the Washington Post. A frantic search ensued:

  • After the mother's call came in at 9:42am, police used license plate technology to track the car near a mall. Officers converged there, to no avail, then to the high school of one of the teens, also a false alarm, reports the New York Times.

  • As police searched for the teens, they received a call about a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego at 11:43am, where they discovered the bodies of three adult males near the entrance. One was a security guard identified as Amin Abdulla, who police credit with saving lives, reports NBC San Diego.
  • Moments later, police received calls about gunfire a few blocks away. They say a landscaper was shot at, but not injured. And they soon found a vehicle with the bodies of the two missing teens, who died of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
  • Police found anti-Islamic writing in the vehicle and say one of the weapons had the words "hate speech" written on it, per the Times. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said the younger teen left a note but did not elaborate. Police have not identified the suspects or the two other victims.
