A lunchtime swim at a Florida Navy base ended in a critical emergency on Monday, NBC News reports. A civilian employee at Naval Support Activity Panama City was attacked by a shark around 11:45am while in the water with a co-worker, officials said. The man, believed to be in his late 20s, suffered serious injuries to both arms and was rushed to HCA Gulf Coast Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition, according to local outlet WJHG. His colleague was not hurt.

Video posted online appears to show the victim screaming for help near the marina as a dorsal fin surfaces beside him before he disappears underwater. Cmdr. Tristan Oliveria, the base's commanding officer, thanked first responders for their quick actions and offered support to the man's family. The employee has not been publicly identified. The water off the state's panhandle is a nursery for shark species, CBS News reports.
