Newsom Says Feds Are Targeting Him, His Wife

California's governor says he has "proudly" joined President Trump's hit list and the feds aren't just poking around his office—they're knocking on his friends' doors and eyeing his wife's finances, too. In a video released Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Trump of weaponizing the Justice Department against him, alleging agents are on a "fishing expedition" targeting his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and associates linked to her nonprofits and film company, the New York Times reports.

• "Donald Trump isn't just coming after me because of my mean tweets," the Democratic governor said. "He's coming after me because I am considering running for president." Investigators "have not found a crime—they are simply trying to find one," he said, adding: "To get me, he's coming after my wife."

What exactly investigators are examining is murky. A source tells the Times that multiple federal probes were opened by law enforcement in California, not Washington, including one focused on Siebel Newsom's finances and payments between her nonprofit, the Representation Project, and her production company. Another nonprofit she co-founded, the California Partners Project, has donors with business before the state; Newsom has disclosed steering $4.3 million its way. An insider tells the AP that investigations were opened after whistleblower complaints last year and leaders in Washington, DC were not behind the decision.

No public evidence of wrongdoing has surfaced. The inquiries come on the heels of a corruption case involving Newsom's former chief of staff and as Trump's acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, pursues cases against Trump's perceived adversaries. "One by one, anyone who has challenged Donald Trump has ended up on his hit list, and today I proudly join that list," Newsom said in the video. He described Trump as a "man with no character" and said he is "selling the presidency," CNN reports. "You can subpoena my records. You can investigate me. You can harass me," Newsom said. "Put my name on every and any enemies list you have, but leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta."
