Iran is poised to let UN nuclear inspectors back in for the first time since June 2025, Vice President JD Vance said Monday after the first round of US–Iran talks wrapped up in Switzerland. Vance called Iran's agreement to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to return to the country "a major milestone and a first step in permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran," though Tehran has not publicly confirmed the decision and details on how much access inspectors will get remain unclear. Coordination with the IAEA could begin "this week, maybe as soon as today," Vance said, per Axios. More:

  • The Qatar- and Pakistan-mediated session began Sunday morning and wrapped up at 3am local time Monday, per those two countries, meaning it lasted roughly 18 hours.
  • In his brief Monday press conference, Vance said that in addition to the IAEA issue, progress had been made on three other major points, which the AP and New York Times list as: Setting up a communications line designed to avoid "incidents and miscommunication" related to the Strait of Hormuz and keep it open; agreeing to create a "de-confliction cell" to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon; and establishing a roadmap for getting to a deal within 60 days.
  • The AP reports Vance also noted that any Iranian financial assets that were unfrozen could be used to buy American-grown food: "American soy, American corn, and American wheat for the benefit of the Iranian people."
