The 2028 presidential field remains to be determined, but a new poll indicates who the theoretical leaders are: Kamala Harris and JD Vance. A McLaughlin & Associates survey released this week shows former Vice President Harris topping the Democratic pack with 26% support, ahead of California Gov. Gavin Newsom at 16% and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 9%. On the Republican side, Vice President Vance pulls 35%, more than double Secretary of State Marco Rubio's 15%. The poll surveyed 464 likely voters between June 17 and 23, USA Today reports.
In early May, an AtlasIntel survey had Ocasio-Cortez leading Democrats and Rubio dominating Republicans, with Vance trailing. An Emerson College poll later that month put Pete Buttigieg slightly ahead among Democrats and showed a virtual tie between Vance and Rubio on the Republican side. And a year ago, a McLaughlin poll found a different lineup, per Newsweek. At that time, the results had Harris with a bigger lead: 30% of Democrats planned to vote for Harris, 8% for Newsom, 10% for Buttigieg, and 7% for Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Cory Booker.
