A four-day electronic music festival in western Michigan ended with a grim discovery: a newborn's body found inside a portable toilet in the event's camping area. Michigan State Police say a worker servicing the restroom units at the Electric Forest Festival at Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury located the remains Sunday morning, NBC News reports. In a statement on X, police described the infant as a "neonate," a newborn 28 days old or younger, and asked anyone who saw anything unusual in the camping area to contact investigators.
"If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward," police said. "We appreciate the public's cooperation and ask that people avoid speculation on social media out of respect for the investigation and those affected." The festival draws 40,000 to 50,000 people every year, People reports. "HQ is heartbroken and knows that our Forest Family is as well," the festival said in a Facebook post.
This isn't the first time tragedy has hit the festival, Rolling Stone reports. Detroit-area man Kevin Graves disappeared from the festival in 2018. His remains weren't found until 2025, with the cause of death classed as undetermined. The festival, with acts including Illenium, Excision, Kaskade, GRiZ, Chris Lake, and The String Cheese Incident, wrapped up Sunday night after tens of thousands were evacuated due to a severe weather warning, MLive reports.
