An early-morning rescue at a Cold War relic in Colorado ended with an 18-year-old in the hospital and fresh warnings from officials to stay away. Metro Denver search and rescue teams converged on private land near the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds around 6am Wednesday after two teens called 911 to report their friend was stuck in an abandoned missile silo, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. The woman, trapped for roughly four hours, was taken to a hospital and was considered stable, a South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson said.
The sheriff's office says the 18-year-old climbed down a ladder into the silo with a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old around 3am, CBS News reports. The other two teens were able to climb out. The sheriff's office is investigating the incident as trespassing and has not yet decided whether to issue citations to the three teens. Sable Altura Fire Chief Rich Solomon says old nuclear missile silos—deep, pitch-black, and potentially filled with hazardous gases—remain extremely risky, the Denver Post reports. "They are incredibly dangerous," he says. "It's an unsafe environment and they need to be sealed up forever."
Solomon warns that for anyone venturing inside the silos, which are hundreds of feet deep, "death is 100% on the table." Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Ginger Delgado told reporters that this was the third silo rescue in the county in two years, CBS reports. "The first time was in May 2024, out in Deer Trail. You may remember that a young man went through that silo, and he was very seriously injured. We had one last year near the town of Bennet, where we had to rescue another teenager in a missile silo," she said. "Please, please stay out of these missile silos."
