Raging Water Inundates West Hollywood

Streets, sidewalks, and even a bus yard turned into a churning stream in West Hollywood early Thursday after a major water main ruptured near Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive. The break, reported shortly after 3am, sent fast-moving water racing south down Palm Avenue toward Santa Monica Boulevard, inundating underground parking garages and apartment entrances, footage showed, per KABC. "It's astonishing," said KABC helicopter reporter Scott Reiff. "You never expect to see a river of water flowing down the street."

Two people fell into a sinkhole that opened up under a sidewalk, KTLA reports, adding that both "seemed okay." Aerial footage also captured one person briefly knocked off their feet by the current before getting back up. Some cars were pushed down streets and into other vehicles, per KCBS. Multiple streets were shut down, while a nearby bus yard was transformed into "a shallow lake," per KTTV. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said crews were working to slowly close large underground valves in the high-pressure system to halt the flow and begin repairs, KNBC reports. Authorities did not immediately detail the cause or provide any damage estimates.
