A longtime 60 Minutes fixture, who was fired this spring along with two other correspondents, is accusing CBS brass of trying to tilt her stories politically. Cecilia Vega told an audience at a National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference on Thursday that for the first time in her 25-year career, she received editorial notes felt driven by "misinformation or politics," the New York Times reports. Vega is the third ousted correspondent, after Scott Pelley and Sharyn Alfonsi, to allege interference from the top. None of the requested changes made it to air, she said.
Vega cited 2024 segments she says drew pressure: one on ICE, for which she said executives wanted footage of protesters misidentifying and attacking civilians, as well as a clip of the Minneapolis police chief rolling his eyes; one on poverty in West Virginia that she says she was told to link to Vice President JD Vance; and another where she was urged to add a line about Iran being outgunned by the US and Israel, which she called "an administration talking point." The police chief clip, Vega said, for instance, "never happened."
CBS rejected Vega's claims as "not based in reality," with editor in chief Bari Weiss saying what's being labeled as interfering is simply doing her job. Vega said she was dismissed in a video call that lasted under two minutes and still doesn't know why. During the interview Thursday in New Orleans, per the Independent, Vega said she was scared to be talking about her experience but that "there is a lot at stake."
