Cyclist Dies Day After Finishing 3.3K-Mile Ride

An 82-year-old Australian cyclist completed what he called "One Last Ride" across the country on Sunday—then died the next day. Australia's ABC reports Bob Montgomery rode roughly 3,300 miles from Broome in Western Australia to his hometown of Bowral in New South Wales over six weeks with his 18-year-old grandson, raising about $75,000 for a motor neurone disease (MND) charity. It was his sixth such fundraising trek, reports the BBC, and his website made clear: "For those who are thinking about the bike, it's not electric! It will be all pedal power."

His wife of 59 years said Montgomery "was surrounded by his friends and family and got all of the credit that he absolutely deserved over the past 48 hours." He had been inspired to raise money after losing a cousin to MND 12 years ago and raised more than $200,000 over the years.
