Ed Case Defeats Challenger From Left in Hawaii House Race

Rep. Ed Case has fended off a challenge from Hawaii's Democratic left flank. The 73-year-old congressman won the primary, per the AP, over state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, 42, who campaigned on bringing a "new generation" to Washington. Case, who was first elected to the House in 2018, had a nearly 14-point lead with 91% of the vote counted, CBS News reports. Three other Democrats also were in the running.

Case leaned on his seniority during the campaign, per the Hill, arguing it helps him deliver during crises, including the pandemic and the Red Hill and Maui disasters. Keohokalole attacked him for crossing party lines to vote for an early version of President Trump's SAVE America Act, as well as his support for military aid to Israel. Case's victory stand out against recent primaries in states including Colorado and New York, where incumbents have fallen to progressive challengers. He'll face Republican Adriel Lam in November.
