Trump Adds More Tariffs, Lays Into Canada Again

The trade fight between the US and Canada got nasty over the weekend—and it just got worse on Monday. President Trump said he would double tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, and auto parts to 50% on the first of the year, reports CNBC. He included steel on the list, but steel tariffs already are at 50%, notes the Wall Street Journal. The penalties would be on top of a separate list of 50% tariffs Trump imposed over the weekend after talks between the two nations collapsed. Canada is readying its own retaliatory list.

The tariffs on autos may not have a huge effect, given that only 5.4% of vehicles made in Canada were sold in the US last year, according to CNBC. But the tenor of Trump's message on Truth Social showed the friction at the root of the impasse. "Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years," Trump asserted. "They feel entitled," he wrote, adding: "Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" The other tariffs went into effect on Saturday, and while they affect a wide range of products, those products account for only 5% of Canada's annual exports to the US, per the AP.
