At least a week after vanishing on a solo hike in one of America's most remote national parks, a 70-year-old backpacker has been found alive. The National Park Service said Craig Berg was discovered "alive and alert" on Michigan's Isle Royale Saturday, thanks in part to fellow adventure-seekers, state police, and local officials, per the Guardian. Berg had set out on a nine-day trek on the Lake Superior island covering more than 200 square miles beginning Aug. 27 and was due to catch a ferry home on Sept. 5. When he didn't return, his family reported him missing and a multi-agency search began.

Officials said Berg was finally spotted by good Samaritans on Saturday, per Fox News. Berg's wife said kayakers venturing into a remote marsh happened upon the traveler, who'd lost his phone but managed to jerry-rig a radio antenna out of a pair of headphones in the hopes of detecting island broadcasts, per My UP Now. A Coast Guard helicopter airlifted him to a regional airport 140 miles away. He had undisclosed injuries and was suffering from hypothermia, officials said. He was in "rough shape" but was able to talk and ask for food and water, his son tells WLUC, adding, "We couldn't be more happy and relieved."
