Two brothers in Glendale, California didn't wait for help to arrive when they saw smoke pouring from a nearby senior home Friday afternoon. Alex and Narek Bazinyan, ages 20 and 15, sprinted to the burning assisted living facility after hearing a nurse yelling for help. They helped pull six elderly residents to safety, KTLA reports.
- "I go inside this big room and I see all these old people on the floor with catheters," Alex recalled. "Some people were injured, had blood on their legs. We just took everybody out one by one."
- "We basically ran in, no second thoughts," Narek tells NBC Los Angeles. "Pretty much, the fire was right next to us. We're basically standing in the fire. We inhaled so much smoke."
As two other neighbors ran over to help, the brothers carried residents out through heavy smoke. They got the last person out just before a blast—likely an exploding oxygen tank—collapsed part of the home, according to the Glendale fire chief. The home's six residents, an employee, and one of the neighbors who helped were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The brothers say they acted on instinct. "If you ever see anyone in need, you should always try to help them out as much as you can," Narek tells KTLA. Authorities say no issues were found during an inspection in March and the cause of the fire is being investigated, CBS News reports.
