President Trump crashed a tech summit by phone on Monday and used the moment to blast fears about artificial intelligence as overblown. Trump called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, and Huang put him on speakerphone for the audience, reports the Verge. "It's a hoax," Trump said during the five-minute call. "The robots are not going to be taking over the world. That's not going to happen." Repeating a familiar theme, Trump said the real priority is making sure the US outpaces China in the technology, per NBC News.
Trump also praised sprawling data centers as economic engines and likened AI to "the oil of the next 20, 25 years," while adding that development should still be handled "prudently." See a video of the call here. Trump also put up multiple posts on Truth Social Monday hammering at the same theme, calling himself the "Hoax Buster" and asserting that the we're-doomed theme is a hoax on par with global warming and the Russia investigation against him. Axios assesses why Trump has become so aggressive on this front: "What's new is the degree to which he now sees the AI boom as his boom—and the safety revolt as an attempt to deny him his place in history," the piece reads. Trump's push comes after top AI executives called for an industry slowdown over the weekend in the name of safety.
