A shooting at a Virginia equipment rental business left two employees dead and a third in the hospital on Wednesday. Police in Manassas say the workplace violence broke out around 7:30am at a United Rentals facility about 30 miles from Washington, DC, ABC News reports. The suspected shooter, United Rentals employee Marvin Grant, fled the scene and killed himself hours later after a standoff with police near Verona, Virginia, around 125 miles southwest of Manassas, CBS 19 reports. Virginia State Police said the 37-year-old died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase on Interstate 81.
Police said a negotiator was called in after Grant pulled over around the 227-mile marker and got out of his vehicle with a gun. The standoff lasted around an hour before Grant shot himself, NBC Washington reports. Police said no troopers fired their weapons.
- Manassas City Police Chief Douglas Keen said the shooting happened in a garage area of the business, with numerous other employees present. Keen said there was "some kind of altercation" and Grant "pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot the three victims," ABC reports. He said the motive is unclear, but Grant allegedly said "three people are going to die."
- Keen identified the slain men as 33-year-old Christopher Serrano and 48-year-old Ricky Lamot, 48, a man the chief knew personally. "The man was dedicated to coaching youth football," Keen said. "Knowing his children are now fatherless, it hits home." The chief said the third victim is in stable condition.
