Poland announced Sunday that it has arrested a man the defense minister said "threatened and planned an attack" an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In a post on X, Tusk credited police with "swift and decisive action." Reuters reports that authorities said an email warning of a possible attack was passed to police by the State Protection Service, which guards senior officials including Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz; both had been identified earlier as potential targets. A government spokesperson said that, though officials occasionally get threats, this one was "exceptionally concerning."
No details about the suspect or a plot were released. An emergency meeting of security services, police, and representatives of the Interior Ministry had convened on Sunday, per the AP. Poland has been on high alert after a series of school stabbings last week, as well as warnings of a possible Russian hybrid attack to weaken Western support for Ukraine in its war against Moscow's full-scale invasion. In August, police arrested a 23-year-old accused of urging the killing of top politicians. Tusk said in 2024 he received threats after the shooting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
