Politics | Mike Johnson Mike Johnson: No Lawn Business for Me House speaker says it was a joke, hopes to remain GOP leader if Democrats take chamber By John Johnson Posted Oct 12, 2026 10:35 AM CDT Copied Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks during a campaign event for Rep. In fact, he hopes to remain his party's leader in the chamber no matter what happens in the midterms, Johnson told CBS News. "In the unlikely scenario where we lost the majority, I would expect my colleagues would ask me to continue leading this conference," he said. Last week, Johnson told Fox News that he's open to any possibility, including going back to Shreveport, Louisiana, and opening a lawn business. The remark drew plenty of attention, and Johnson told CBS he made the remark "tongue in cheek" and finds it "hilarious" that some took him seriously. "I was trying to make the point that if God has a different design, then we'll follow that," he said. "But what I believe is, I'm going to be the speaker of the House for at least two more years." Johnson has been aggressively campaigning for GOP candidates around the nation of late. However, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report doesn't agree with his GOP optimism: The site shifted nearly 20 House races in Democrats' favor last week and now thinks it's likely that Democrats will regain control, per the Washington Post.
