US | polls Polls Have Trump's Approval Reaching a Low Point One finds voters see an advantage to a Democratic Congress By Bob Cronin Posted Oct 18, 2026 5:00 PM CDT Updated Oct 18, 2026 7:01 PM CDT Copied President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Truist Arena, Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, in Highland Heights, Ky. (AP Photo/Jeff Dean) Two new polls have found the nation divided two-thirds/one-third on the job President Trump is doing, a split that is not going the Republicans' way as midterms near. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll finds the president has a 33% approval rating among US adults, while 66% disapprove, a new low. An NBC News Decision Desk Poll puts his approval rate at 34% and disapproval rate at 66%, its low point for Trump's second term. That poll also found that 71% of American adults think the nation is on the "wrong track," per NBC. There's more for Democrats to like. The Post poll found respondents, for the first time in more than a decade, rated Democrats as more trustworthy in handling the economy. In a shift especially relevant to the midterms, registered voters said they prefer to have a Democratic-run Congress that could act as a check on Trump than a Republican majority to back his agenda. That split, 58% to 39%, reflects almost twice the support Democrats had a year ago. But then, NBC points out voters aren't crazy about either party.
