There's no mercy rule in World Cup level soccer. The US women's under-17 team crushed Samoa in the U-17 World Cup on Monday by a record-breaking score of 17-0. It's the largest margin of victory in a World Cup match at any level, reports the Athletic. Ten different players scored, but none more than forward Maddie DiMaria, who put up six and entered the record books in two big ways: the most goals by a US player in one match, and the most goals by any player in a FIFA women's World Cup match.
"I wasn't aware [we were breaking a record], but I'm super proud of this group, and it's nice that they have something like that behind their name," said US coach Ciara Crinion in an interview posted on FIFA's website, per ESPN. This is Samoa's first appearance in the U-17 tournament.
