Christina Applegate says the diagnosis that upended her life for years was wrong—and she's not relieved. On her MeSsy podcast, which she'd taken a hiatus from for seven months to deal with her health, the 54-year-old actor tearfully recounted a recent appointment where her doctor told her, "Congratulations, you don't have MS," reports People. "I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy." Applegate said her symptoms haven't improved, however, and, if anything, have worsened. She still relies on a wheelchair for basic errands and says she's "back at square one" as doctors reassess what has been happening to her since 2021.
"Nothing magical happened when [the doctor] said, 'You don't have MS,'" Applegate told podcast co-host Jamie Lynn Sigler, who's been documenting her own struggle with the neurological disorder. Applegate added that new technology had helped figure out the misdiagnosis, per Variety. Neurologist Marwa Kaisey, who joined the episode, noted that multiple sclerosis is frequently misdiagnosed, with about 1 in 5 patients later found not to have it.
Applegate, who'd become a public face of MS, said she now feels she has "let everybody down" and is struggling to process the news and her still-mysterious illness. "I've gone through a great depression because of it," she noted. "I had a f---ing reason as to why my day sucked every day. And now I don't have a reason and it's very unnerving and it's really confusing for me." Listen to the episode in full here.
