The Washington Post is highlighting an irony about a political ad airing in Iowa: In it, a public official calls out a Democratic candidate for the House as "just plain dangerous" for children. But that same public official pleaded guilty to child endangerment after driving under the influence with two of her children in the car back in 2017. After the story came out, 55-year-old Shellie Flockhart, a Dallas Center GOP city councilwoman, issued a statement acknowledging a "profound failure in judgment" in the 2017 incident and says she has since had a faith-driven return to sobriety.
The ad in question centers on Iowa state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, a Democrat running for the House against GOP incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn. Flockhart and other women in the spot say Trone Garriott's voting record in support of transgender rights poses risks for minors. The candidate's campaign says the ad is made up of "desperate lies." Nunn's campaign did not comment on the ad, which was put out by the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC.
