President Trump escalated his criticism of Iran late Thursday, accusing the government of restricting oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and warning it not to impose passage fees on tankers. After reports emerged of sharply reduced ship movements in the waterway, Trump said in a social media post that Iran was "doing a very poor job" of allowing oil to move through the strait, the Wall Street Journal reports. Only eight vessels passed through on Thursday, compared with a typical daily traffic of about 135, and those were reportedly carrying only Iranian cargo. Trump added, per the New York Times, "That is not the agreement we have!"

Trump also referenced reports that Iran was charging tankers to use the strait, writing that "they better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!" His comments followed a statement by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of Iran's parliament national security committee, per the Journal, who said Tehran was collecting about $2 million from some ships to transit the channel. Safe passage through the strait would be possible under coordination with its military and within "technical limitations," Iran's foreign minister said in a statement. Analysts pointed out, per the Times, that that was Iran's position before the ceasefire, as well.
