Cheryl Strayed is stepping away from public life after sharing that her husband, documentary filmmaker Brian Lindstrom, is facing what she describes as a "serious, fatal illness," People reports. In an Instagram post Thursday, the 57-year-old author said she has canceled a writing workshop at Kripalu and an appearance at Hunter College. "My apologies to those of you who made plans to be there. I simply cannot do anything but be with my family right now and see to our broken hearts," she wrote, asking people to keep them in their thoughts and prayers. No diagnosis was disclosed for the man affectionately known as "Mr. Sugar" in Strayed's "Dear Sugar" advice columns, E! Online reports.
Strayed noted that upbeat clips from her Mind Over Mountain podcast may keep appearing on social media, but said those conversations were recorded "in easier, happier times." The Wild author, whose memoir recounting her mother's death and the end of her first marriage became a 2014 film starring Reese Witherspoon and whose Tiny Beautiful Things was adapted into a Hulu series, first met Lindstrom in 1995, when she was 27. Their first meeting took place shortly after Strayed completed her hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, famously recounted in her memoir, Today reports.
Lindstrom's work includes the documentaries Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse and Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill. The couple, who wed in 1999 and co-directed the 2019 film We Are Forbidden, share two adult children. "There's no doing it without him," she said of her relationship and career in 2012. "He's always, always, always been there for me, every time I needed him. He encourages me. He believes in me."
