Martin Short is publicly reckoning with the loss of his eldest child for the first time. In an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, Short described the death of 42-year-old Katherine Short in Feburary as "a nightmare for the family." The Los Angeles County medical examiner ruled her death a suicide, and Short drew a parallel between Katherine's death after mental health struggles and that of his wife, Nancy Dolman, who died of ovarian cancer in 2010. Both are diseases, he said, and diseases are sometimes terminal.
- "My daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn't," said the 76-year-old actor and comedian. "So, Nan's last words to me were, 'Martin, let me go.' And what [Katherine] was just saying [was], 'Dad, let me go.'"
Short said he wants to help "take mental health out of the shadows" for more open discussions, per the Guardian. "Not hiding from the word suicide, but accepting that this can be the last stage of an illness." The actor said grief has given him "a muscle of survival" and perspective: After such experiences, he said, the fear of an audience not responding to him no longer carries the same weight. A new Netflix documentary about his life, Marty, Life Is Short, debuts on Tuesday.
