John Oliver is trading his HBO desk for a hospital set—temporarily. The Last Week Tonight host will appear in a three-episode arc on General Hospital, airing Thursday, Friday, and Monday, July 6. Oliver revealed the cameo on his show Sunday, months after publicly saying he wanted a soap-opera role, reports Variety. Executive producer Frank Valentini said the team jumped at the chance and called Oliver "prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind," adding that he plays a key character in the storyline. Oliver joked it was "a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show."
Oliver's appeal for a side hustle came during his March 8 show, notes the Hollywood Reporter, and went thusly:
- "To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast, it will make your head spin." He pleaded for a character with a "ridiculous" name and said "I want to do something juicy, like murder, or slapping, or being slapped, or being someone's long-lost something."
General Hospital, now in its 64th year, is the longest-running scripted drama on American TV. Oliver's own show is in its 13th season and has collected 32 Emmys.
