Parents in Toledo, Ohio, never made it to the cap-and-gown moment at a kindergarten graduation after a fight over seats erupted into a brawl that ended with one person in the hospital and another under arrest. Police say they were called to the Queen of Apostles School around 8:45am on Thursday after multiple adults became involved in a physical altercation in the viewing area, while children were in a separate area rehearsing, WTVG and WTOL report. Parent Craig Mays tells WTVG he was "sucker punched" and then pinned to the ground and hit by several people after a dispute over families moving chairs and blocking his child's mother's view.
Mays said his daughter's mother, 26, was treated in an emergency room and needed staples in her head. He adds to WTOL that her wrist is also "pretty messed up," and that her knees are "pretty bad." Another attendee, identified by police as 28-year-old Jessica Anderson, was arrested at the scene and charged with felonious assault. Court documents allege that Anderson grabbed a woman by the hair and slammed her head into a chair, causing a wound that required stitches.
Video obtained by WTVG shows several adults shoving and throwing punches as others attempt to break up the melee, with some people ending up on the floor amid rows of folding chairs. The school later posted a statement on Facebook thanking Toledo police for their quick response, adding that all students were safe and the final day of school went on as planned. The kindergarten graduation ceremony itself was canceled; it's not yet clear if it will be rescheduled.
