A California man whose home was known for its pro-Trump and patriotic displays has died following an assault outside his house. Police say 69-year-old Kerry Sheron succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, a few days after he was allegedly attacked in Escondido, north of San Diego, reports NBC News. Prosecutors allege 32-year-old Escondido resident Thomas Caleb Butler punched Sheron in the jaw during the May 20 attack, then continued striking him after he fell. A bystander who tried to step in was also hurt, authorities said. Per the Military Times, Sheron, who residence became known as "the Trump house," was a veteran of the US Army, while Butler is a Navy vet.
Butler, arrested after reportedly fleeing the scene, has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and battery and is being held without bail, per NBC. A deputy district attorney described the attack as unprovoked and said it's unclear if the men knew each other; investigators haven't IDed a motive or noted if there will be upgraded charges in the wake of Sheron's death. Sheron's wife told NBC San Diego that the couple had faced prior harassment over their political decorations but added that they'd never been physically attacked. The medical examiner has yet to release Sheron's cause and manner of death.
