A routine day in right field turned weird for Toronto's Jesus Sánchez on Sunday in Baltimore, ESPN reports. The Blue Jays outfielder left the game with a bruised right wrist after being struck by a ball tossed from the bleachers by a young fan who apparently thought Sánchez wanted to play catch. The incident unfolded in the sixth inning of the Orioles' 9-5 win, after Sánchez glanced toward fans in right field and the kid fired a ball that caught him on the wrist. X-rays were negative, and Sánchez, sporting a bandage postgame, said it was "a complete misunderstanding" and that he expects to be fine: "It hurts a little bit, but … I'll be all right." He was diagnosed with a right wrist contusion, CBS Sports reports.

Toronto manager John Schneider also framed it as a misunderstanding, though Orioles officials said they identified and removed the fan and are investigating. "[Sánchez] was kind of talking to a, I think it was a 12-year-old kid ... in a playful manner, like almost, 'Let's play catch.' I think the kid took it literally," Schneider said. Sánchez had just lifted up his glove before the ball was tossed, Yahoo Sports reports. Baltimore manager Craig Albernaz stressed the team doesn't tolerate fans throwing anything onto the field.
