Jannik Sinner didn't just lose at Roland Garros; he ran out of gas in real time, the BBC reports. The world tennis No. 1, riding a 30-match win streak and viewed as the clear favorite at the French Open, led Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 before his body shut down in a five-set collapse to the Argentine ranked 56th. Sinner said he woke up Thursday feeling unwell, described feeling "dizzy" and "very low on energy," and took multiple medical timeouts, but rejected the idea that the 93-plus degree heat was the main factor: "It was nothing against the heat ... It was just me today, but it happens." Still, USA Today reports the "oppressive" heat wave was affecting many players.

The defeat ends Sinner's shot at completing the career Grand Slam for now and raises renewed questions about his durability over long matches. He has lost 12 of 18 matches that went the distance and has never won a contest lasting more than four hours. The Italian, who has played an intense schedule and swept the major clay Masters events this spring, conceded his preparation might be revisited in hindsight but said he'll now shut things down until his Wimbledon title defense, aiming to "recover completely and mentally." Cerundolo also offered his well wishes, saying he hopes Sinner feels better, CNN reports.
