A 19-year-old Texas man convicted of stabbing a fellow teenager in the heart at a high school track meet last year was swiftly delivered to a state prison on Wednesday. Karmelo Anthony was taken into custody Tuesday after a jury took less than three hours to find him guilty of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in Frisco and sentenced him to 35 years, per Fox News. He had remained free during the trial but was moved to the Collin County Jail infirmary following the verdict. By Wednesday, he'd been moved to an unnamed state facility through an "expedited" transfer, per CBS News.

Anthony's prison term falls short of the maximum life sentence he faced. Under Texas law, he could seek parole after serving roughly half of his sentence. Court records indicate Anthony had filed a notice of appeal challenging the conviction before even reaching prison. Though witnesses said he was the aggressor, Anthony argued he stabbed Metcalf, a competitor from a rival school, in self-defense. Supporters, including Cardi B, have framed the outcome as a miscarriage of justice, with some suggesting race played a role. Metcalf was white; Anthony is Black, though none of the jurors were, per the BBC.
