Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell is facing a family tragedy as his brother stands accused in their mother's death. Atlanta's WSB-TV reports that Ciarre Campbell was booked early Wednesday in Fulton County Jail on charges including murder, aggravated assault, and weapon possession after police found 71-year-old Nateal Campbell dead during a welfare check at her home on Tuesday. The weapon was said to be a knife, and arrest warrants indicate that the matriarch's throat had been slashed, per the AP.
The Campbell family confirmed Nateal's death in a statement but didn't address the charges, asking for privacy as they grieve. Atlanta police said they'd previously responded to the residence, including for a possible arson call in April, and noted indications of potential mental-health concerns involving "an individual," per WSB. Calais Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowler and 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, co-founded a charitable foundation with his mother and brother, per NBC Sports. The organization's collateral notes that the football star has attributed his successes partly to being a kid in a "household bursting at the seams with love."
