Mamdani on His Wins: It's a 'National Message'

Zohran Mamdani is treating last week's New York primaries as more than a local win. The New York City mayor told ABC's This Week that the victories by three democratic socialist candidates he backed for Congress sends a "national message" to people all over the country who are worn down by basic costs of living. The mayor cast the wins, along with five state legislature victories, as proof that a "New Deal" type of message is resonating. "We don't have to nationalize that message," Mamdani said. "That is a national message—it's a national crisis."

That framing alarms party centrists, who've pushed back with an open letter from 15 House Democrats declaring, "We are capitalist, not socialist … mainstream, not extreme," per the Guardian. And President Trump has picked up the same theme ahead of the midterms by accusing Democrats of embracing "communists." Mamdani, however, argued his movement is rooted in results, pointing to a rent freeze covering about 1 million apartments, new free child care for 2-year-olds, and a long list of repaired potholes.

"For far too long, all we've had to say as a party is opposition to the current administration. What do we have to say beyond that?" Mamdani said. "What these candidates offer is a vision that extends beyond the midterms, it extends beyond 2028." Establishment Democrats warn that "nationalizing New York" will flop by November, but figures like Sen. Chris Murphy are more welcoming of Mamdani's movement. He told NBC's Meet the Press that while he's not embracing socialism, "this version of capitalism isn't working," per the Hill.
