Before the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk allegedly fired a shot from a Utah Valley University rooftop, prosecutors say he walked around campus in shorts, ate Chick-fil-A, and approached members of Kirk's staff. Surveillance footage played in court on Tuesday allegedly shows 23-year-old Tyler Robinson present at the campus four hours prior to the Sept. 10, 2025, shooting, reports the BBC. David Hull, the Utah Bureau of Investigation's lead investigator on the case, testified Robinson appeared to purchase a meal and interacted with Turning Point USA members, though Hull did not specify the substance of those interactions.
Hull testified Robinson allegedly left and returned, dressed in different clothes, about 90 minutes prior to Kirk being shot. After the shooting, Hull said Robinson attempted to return to campus around 12:30am, this time in a grey Dodge Challenger. Per the video, the vehicle arrived at a stoplight less than a half-mile from the crime scene, and the driver attempted to turn right into campus, but instead pulled away after a police officer briefly spoke with the driver. Hull said the officer's "cop intuition" led him to take down the license plate number, reports the New York Times; the car was registered to Robinson.
Defense attorneys voiced repeated objections, saying the footage was edited and those who filmed it weren't present to testify. The judge is expected to rule after the hearing ends Friday.
