McGregor's Hyped Comeback Lasted Only 69 Seconds

Conor McGregor's first UFC fight in five years ended so quickly and so badly that he is fending off allegations he had a pre-existing injury. The 37-year-old opened his bout over the weekend with a charging kick against Max Holloway, but McGregor landed awkwardly on his right leg, reports the Guardian. The ref called the bout after 69 seconds when it was clear McGregor wouldn't be able to continue, per the BBC. "I had no injury/injuries going into the fight," he wrote on social media afterward. "I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here."

UFC CEO Dana White said the injury looked like a torn ACL to him, but there's been no official word yet. McGregor had called the fight in advance "the comeback of all comebacks in sports history," notes the Guardian. He will have to console himself with an estimated payday of $15 million for a little over a minute of work, per Yahoo Sports. Galloway, an American, likely made closer to $5 million. McGregor was in the headlines for another reason last week: After a previous injury to his other leg, he reportedly stayed on steroids and human growth hormone even after it healed.
